A-COLD-WALL* X MACKINTOSH
Anyone that’s out and about on English soil has inevitably grown used to dealing with the country’s unpredictable weather and, quite often, seeing what first seems like a sunny day get muggy or windy or grey to the point where the inevitable happens and all of a sudden the rain pours — sporadically at best, very possibly nonstop for a full three days. It’s a quintessentially British setting and thus it isn’t uncommon for the designers and brands that emerge from it to propose something that’s technical and versatile in nature. And though established in very different times, both A-COLD-WALL* and Mackintosh are a testimony of this: the former with function-minded garments, the latter with the pioneering and elegantly utilitarian raincoat, the mac /
This time around, signature Mackintosh mac coats and jackets have been reinterpreted through the lens of A-COLD-WALL* designer Samuel Ross’ vision of what technical wear is. Honouring the century-old brand’s famed rubberised fabric and letting it be a blueprint of waterproof technology, Ross’ take on the construction of the macs is, however, less rooted in traditions and more contemporary and, as ever, laser precise.
The collection’s showcase piece, the ACWMO055 long coat, mixes angular shapes with contrast panelling as well as sporting a single, modest yet bold metallic button and eyelets for extra breathability. A shorter coat, the ACWMO056, is a tad more compact in its execution and therefore has more potential for interchangeability. Both pieces were made in Scotland and have received a practical water-repellent treatment.
Mirroring Mackintosh’s classic bonded and rubberised cotton, the other pieces in the collection — from the gilet to the overshirt and legwear pieces — are made from RAINTEC, which has a soft to touch, water- and windproof membrane that’s suitable across all seasons. And then, the icing on the cake: a bucket hat with, of course, a techy detachable flap at back.
Dually rooted in time-tested traditions and the quest for innovation, the A-COLD-WALL* Mackintosh collection proves that while some things may change over time, others don’t; for they work perfectly fine. One such is the mac’s storied legacy.
