SPACE AVAILABLE X ALEX OLSON

Just last year deforestation in Indonesia has wiped out a forested area the size of Los Angeles (which was a record low and apparently good news). While it’s not particularly fashionable at the minute to give Covid-19 much credit for anything, it forced us all and perhaps such grim economic developments to slow down. But as things get back to normalcy, this too could resume as “normal”. Unless we act Indonesian forests will keep on shrinking, and so will its wildlife populations.

Hence why SPACE AVAILABLE and Alex Olson are on it /

In a bid to rescue the species that’s most at risk of extinction from massive deforestation, the orangutan, they’ve linked up with The Sumatran Orangutan Society to support their reforestation scheme. With them, they aim to plant 10 000 trees in the Sumatran rainforest as well as investing into frontline initiatives. To achieve this, they will donate a portion of the proceeds from the collection they’ve just released, “TRASH FOR TREES”.

The capsule is named as such because everything it contains has been made from either plastic trash or surplus fabrics. Rescued from landfills and rivers, the plastic waste was cleaned and melted into strips that were braided by Balinese local weavers into a sun hat and a water bottle carrier, both in muted ocean tones. Whereas the tees were made from upcycled factory off-cuts and feature bold graphics and slogans like “HELP THE CHANGE”.

Alex Olson has always made a conscious effort to promote environmental activism and now, together with SPACE AVAILABLE, he’s dedicated to cleaning up the plastic trash in our oceans; and then, in a second step, to restoring forests.

The collection is available to purchase from DSM worldwide and SPACE AVAILABLE’s website
